What is Fair Trade?
All Beklina products are either made in the USA or fairly traded. As defined by the Fair Trade Federation: “Fair Trade means an equitable and fair partnership between marketers in North America and producers in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and other parts of the world. A fair trade partnership works to provide low-income artisans and farmers with a living wage for their work.”

The criteria for joining the Fair Trade Federation are the following: • Paying a fair wage in the local context • Offering employees opportunities for advancement • Providing equal employment opportunities for all people, particularly the most disadvantaged • Engaging in environmentally sustainable practices • Being open to public accountability • Building long-term trade relationships • Providing healthy and safe working conditions within the local context • Providing financial and technical assistance to producers whenever possible

There is not yet a fair trade certification process in place for manufactured goods as there is for some foods. However, the Fair Trade Federation has an extensive screening and approving process for its members.

Why organic clothing?
While the pesticides from the cotton in your clothing most likely will not seep into your bloodstream,  buying organic clothing helps lessen the impact that conventional farming has on the earth.  Organic agriculture protects the environment and health of people by reducing exposure to toxic chemicals that can end up in the ground, air, water, and food supply.  The following are some facts about pesticides and organic cotton from the Organic Trade Association:

• Approximately 10% of all pesticides sold for use in U. S. agriculture were applied to cotton in 1997, the most recent year for which such data is publicly available. (ACPA) • Fifty-five million pounds of pesticides were sprayed on the 12.8 million acres of conventional cotton grown in the U.S. in 2003 (4.3 pounds/ acre), ranking cotton third in total amount of pesticides sprayed. (USDA) • Over 2.03 billion pounds of synthetic fertilizers were applied to conventional cotton in 2000 (142 pounds/acre), making cotton the fourth most heavily fertilized crop. (USDA) • The Environmental Protection Agency considers seven of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton in 2000 in the United States as "possible," "likely," "probable," or "known" human carcinogens (acephate, dichloropropene, diuron, fluometuron, pendimethalin, tribufos, and trifluralin). (EPA) • It takes roughly one-third of a pound of chemicals (pesticides and fertilizers) to grow enough cotton for just one T-shirt. (SCP)

We invite you to email us with questions, comments, or anything that comes to mind. We want to offer the best in quality, price, and service. Please let us know how we may improve our site or product offerings, or just pass along your dream-store visions. Tell us what you want; you might just get it.
